Chapter 15

Easton paced back and forth in front of the diner. Natalie had texted an hour before that she would be there fifteen minutes ago, but there had been no sign of her since then. He’d been stopped by many of the older ladies in Coldwater Creek, asking him who or what he was waiting for, but he could see their minds working.

“A friend.” Short and simple, giving them nothing else to gossip about.

Soon enough, he felt a tap on his shoulder and turned to find someone dressed as a witch, the face painted green and everything. He peered closer, trying to figure out who it was.

“It’s me, Natalie. Why aren’t you dressed up?” she asked, pulling some of her fake black hair out of her mouth.

“Um, we don’t usually dress up for this. Did I tell you we did?” Panic coursed through him. He racked his brain, trying to remember every bit of conversation they’d had about the carnival.

She grinned, her bright white teeth contrasting against the dark green paint on the rest of her face. Shaking her head, she said, “No, I just thought it would spice things up. We can always help you get dressed up as well.”

Not liking her tone, he looked at her out of the corner of his eye. “What do you mean?”

“Well, we can find something for you at the old thrift store a block away. I think it’s still open for a few minutes. Want to try it?” She gazed up at him, her light blue eyes holding his attention and causing him to forget what they were talking about.

As the pieces all came together, he realized she wanted him to dress up, something he hadn’t done since about the sixth grade. Not even for those dumb parties in college had he attempted to dress as anything but himself. He wasn’t sure if it was a matter of pride or discomfort.

He waved his hand in the air and said, “I think we’ll be okay. Let’s just head over there.”

“Come on. I think it’ll be fun to dress up. Maybe we’ll start a trend for next year.” The pleading in her tone and on her face caused him to bite down, clipping the side of his tongue in the process.

“Fine,” he said, walking in the direction of the thrift store. He’d wanted to spend time with this girl, but now his tongue hurt, and he was going to have to wear some weird costume that would probably make his skin itch.

Natalie caught up quickly, the long black dress swirling around her legs as she walked. Easton breathed out a long sigh. This was only for a couple of hours. He could handle anything for that long, and if it was something fun, maybe just pleasing her would help him enjoy it more.

“Why the witch costume?” he asked, glancing at her sideways.

“I’ve always loved witches. I’m actually the Wicked Witch of the West,” she said, pulling up her skirt to reveal striped socks that looked just like the character from The Wizard of Oz.
